GIZ Project: TRANSfer - Towards climate-friendly transport technologies and measures

Financed by the International Climate Initiative (ICI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the new TRANSfer project aims to enable decision-makers in developing countries to develop climate change strategies in the transport sector to be registered as Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions - so called NAMAs. The NAMA concept was finally agreed on at the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in CancĂșn, Mexico in December 2010.

During the 3-year project, project partners will develop the online handbook "Navigating Transport NAMAs" with practical advice on how to develop and implement a mitigation action in the transport sector. The handbook will consist of a generic part with general information on transport NAMAs and a number of case studies which will be based on south-south networks of countries and practical implementation within the partner countries Colombia, Indonesia and South Africa.

Background to the interest on NAMAs in the transport sector is, that almost no CDM projects have been successfully registered as CDM projects. Focusing on policies rather than on projects fits much better to the transport challenge. Hence, the final intention is to achieve co-benefits, i.e. reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector and, at the same time, achieve more efficient and sustainable transport systems in developing countries.
