Bridging the Gap: NAMA submissions

The Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) submitted by non-Annex I country Parties to the UNFCCC had an initial deadline of 31st of January but are continuing to be submitted. There have now been 43 submissions and 28 of these make direct reference to the transport sector. The Bridging the Gap Initiative has analysed these submissions from a transport perspective.

E-Learning course: Sustainable Urban Mobility in Developing Countries

The Local Development Programme of UNITAR, in partnership with GTZ, the German Technical Cooperation, is launching a new e-learning course on "Sustainable Urban Mobility in Developing Countries", running from 4 October 2010 to 18 March 2011. The e-course aims to enhance the capacity of local decision makers and urban and transportation planners to formulate and implement appropriate policies that contribute to sustainability in urban transport in developing countries. It allows an analysis of the main issues of sustainable transport including transport demand management, improved public and non-motorized transport, environmental protection, road safety, and gender in transport.

ICLEI Congress in Cancun

The Mexican Chapter of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability - celebrated its national congress in Cancun, Mexico from the 25th-27th of August in preparation for COP16.The event was cosponsored by many national groups including the Mexican Federal Government, the Mexican Mayors Association, and the National Federation of Municipalities. ICLEI serves as the interlocutor of local governments at the UNFCCC.

The congress gathered representatives of municipalities from all over the country to share experiences with experts and representatives from all over the globe in a variety of topics including sustainability, mitigation and adaptation to climate change.The panelists included the Mayor of Mexico City and current President of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, Marcelo Ebrard, as well as the Head of the Mexican delegation to the UNFCCC, Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba.

"Bridging the Gap" collaborator, Centro de Transporte Sustentable-Mexico (CTS), together with the Mexican Ministry for Social Development, organized a workshop on "Low-carbon Cities through a Vision of Sustainable Mobility". Representing Bridging the Gap, Ramon Cruz from ITDP, made a presentation on climate change mitigation instruments and finance.Gabriela NiƱo from CTS-Mexico spoke on the role of transport in the Mexican GHG emissions, the results of World Bank study on transport mitigation actions, and the avoid-shift-improve model.

GTZ presents Background Paper "Beyond the Fossil City" at 5th EST Forum in Bangkok

The increasing motorization and urbanization together with the oil dependence of the transport sector lead to considerable growth rates of carbon emissions. GTZ prepared a background paperd "Beyond the Fossil City: Towards Low Carbon Transport and Green Growth" to the 5th Regional EST Forum held in Bangkok, Thailand, 23-25 August 2010 shows how low-carbon transportation policies could help countries to achieve sustainable growth. Sustainable Development Policies and Measures in the transport sector include a variety of co-benefits that can be implemented at reasonable costs and can promote economic growth and social stability.

The Regional Forum on Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) provides a strategic platform between the governments and the selected experts who meet periodically to discuss various EST related issues and share best practices/experiences. The experts of the Forum provide strategic guidance to the participating countries (ASEAN + 4) in the relevant EST areas, including the formulation of national EST strategies. The final output of the 2010 Forum was the Bangkok Declaration.

Experts Call For Urgent Transport Financing Changes ASAP

At a meeting today of top transportation and environment leaders from two dozen governments across Asia, key experts said changes in how transport is financed are essential if cities and nations are to deal effectively with the rapid growth in motor vehicle traffic and related environmental and health problems, including climate change.

GTZ Sourcebook Module on Financing Sustainable Urban Transport is out now!

Urban transport has historically not received the attention, careful planning and financial support it deserves in order to function in a sustainable manner. As a step to address this issue, this new GTZ Sourcebook module provides detailed information on available options for financing urban transport. It presents different financing instruments and ways in which they can be best used, and how to optimally combine them. This module is dedicated to policy makers, financial sector specialists and urban planners/practitioners working on key challenges related to financing urban transport systems.

In this module, the author, Mr. Ko Sakamoto, Senior Transport Consultant at the UK Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and an expert in the field of finance, builds upon work done earlier by Dr. Gerhard Metschies.
This document also has substantial research inputs by Mr.Stefan Belka, GTZ.
