UNFCCC released provisional Agenda for Bonn

The UNFCCC has released the provisional agenda for the 11th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 11), and the ninth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 9). It is the first round of formal UNFCCC negotiations for 2010 and will be held from 9-11 April 2010, in Bonn, Germany. During the session the AWG-LCA will be invited to agree on the organization of its work, including the calendar of meetings in 2010, and methods of work that will allow the AWG-LCA to resolve outstanding issues in the negotiations while ensuring inclusiveness.

Outline schedule of the 18th CSD published

The "organisation of work" of the two-week long 18th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), to be held in New York in May, has now been published. Transport, which is one of the key themes for this session, will be discussed in a "thematic discussion" on 4 May (Tue) and 5 May (Wed). A roundtable titled "Meeting the challenge of transportation needs in 21st century" will also be held as part of the high-level segment on 13 May.

Submission to the UNFCCC on the development of standardised baselines

The Transport Research Foundation has made a the submission on behalf of the Bridging the Gap Initiative with endorsement from the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) on "the modalities and procedures for the development of standardised baselines that are broadly applicable, while providing for a high level of environmental integrity and taking into account specific national circumstances". The submission provides recommendations for methods of standardisation which can help improve the efficiency, applicability and environmental integrity of CDM in the transport sector.

New member of the initiative

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), a non-profit organization that promotes equitable and sustainable development, is now a full and active member of Bridging the Gap initiative. ITDP, with offices in the U.S., Latin America, Asia, and Africa, has been actively working with Bridging the Gap since fall 2009, engaging in cooperative action in various climate meetings in Bangkok, Barcelona, and Brussels, and at the COP15 in Copenhagen. GTZ, TRL, UITP and Veolia are happy to welcome their new partner.

United Nations Forum on Climate Change Mitigation, Fuel Efficiency and Sustainable Urban Transport

The UN Forum on Climate Change Mitigation, Fuel Efficiency and Sustainable Development of Urban Transport met from 16-17 March 2010, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, in preparation for the 18th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD). CSD 18 (New York, US, from 3-14 May 2010) will review of environmental progress made in the implementation of decisions on transport and sustainable development followed by formulating the way forward during 2011. The Forum options to enhance public transport and curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, public private partnerships, financing public transport in developing countries, among others. Daniel Bongardt (GTZ) and Heather Allen (UITP) participated on behalf of the Bridging the Gap Initiative and consequently linked international negotiations on transport and climate change under the CSD and the UNFCCC.
