Energy Efficient Transport - Johannesburg gets ready for the Soccer World Cup

For the Soccer World Cup, the organizers are expecting thousands of fans from all over the world in Johannesburg. The thousands of visitors do not need to worry about getting to the two stadiums, Soccer City and Ellis Park, in the quickest, safest and most comfortable way as the new "Rea Vaya" Bus Rapid Transit system is now in operation.

Not only will the soccer fans benefit from the new "Rea Vaya" buses, the new public transport will also be an asset for thousands of daily commuters, especially the urban poor and those from historically disadvantaged townships, in meeting their mobility needs. Moreover, they will not only save time but also money. A ride on BRT is cheaper than taking one of the minibuses, which was till recently, the main mode of transport in Johannesburg city

Commissioned by the German Federal Government, the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) Bankengruppe financed the planning of a new public transport system in Johannesburg and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) is advising the City of Johannesburg on the planning and the construction of its Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).
