Climate talks in Bonn conclude by holding two extra meetings during 2010

The first round of climate talks after the Copenhagen summit concluded in Bonn on Monday morning, 12th April. The Bridging the Gap Initiative was present with an exhibit at the meeting and had several discussions with climate negotiators at the initiative's stand.

Back to the list

The main outcomes of the meetings are:

  • The rough outline for further proceedings in 2010, whereby two more meetings will be scheduled between the June meetings in Bonn and the climate summit in Cancùn, Mexico, in late 2010, each at least one week in duration.
  • Both of the AWGs invited their chairs to prepare text to facilitate negotiations among Parties, in time for the June sessions in Bonn.

During the course of the meeting, the following issues were observed as shaping the current and future nature of the negotiations:

  • There was divergence in views with regard to the success and relevance of the Copenhagen Accord for future climate talks. It remains to be seen to what extent the elements expressed within the accord would be formally brought into the two-track negotiation process.
  • Several sources including Yvo de Boer noted that the Cancun meeting would be an "interim COP" which may pave way for a legally binding agreement by COP17 in Johannesburg, 2011.
  • Transparent tracking of fast-track finance and MRV form some of the key issues that will need to take a more concrete shape in the following process

Given the current situation, the transport sector needs to continue its efforts in contributing to a successful agreement by:

  • Providing ideas on how actions in transport can assist Parties in reaching higher levels of ambition for mitigation of their greenhouse gases.
  • Developing ideas on financial mechanisms in the transport sector that can contribute to mitigation efforts in developing countries.

Bridging the Gap will closely follow the process in 2010 to work towards these ends.
